@FIBAWC: Serbia closer to China, important win against Greece (@FIBA)

The National team of Serbia won 84 – 61 against Greece in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers in the “Aleksandar Nikolić” Sports Hall (also known as Pionir), in Belgrade. It was the first defeat for Hellas in these Qualifiers. Before the game, Greece had already Qualified for China due to its 9 Victories. On the other side, if Serbia wants to participate at the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019, Đorđević’s squad needs to win one of the two remaining games in these Qualifiers: against Estonia or Israel. Those games will be played in February. Stefan Jović was the top scorer with 22 points for Sebia. The Point guard from Munich also had 4 assists and 3 steals but 7 turnovers. The Serbian basketball team is playing against Greece in Belgrade and before that match, the head coach Aleksandar Đorđević made a comment about the game against Israel. Serbia lost in Tel Aviv with a score of 83 – 74. “We reacted very well after defeat against Israel. We know where we made mistakes and, also, why. We analysed some things, talk about them, the way we always do and after yesterday recovering practice, today we are on the court again to get ready for Greece. We need to forget the match against Israel ASAP. We learned something from that game and now we need to focus on Greece. They won’t feel any pressure. Players from their national league are here full of self-confidence and with a desire to prove themselves. They made an excellent result, they will be participants at World Cup. So without pressure they will give their maximum.

In the first game of the November FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers Window, Israel won 83 – 74 against Serbia in Tel Aviv and ruined the first chance for Aleksandar Đorđević’s squad to book a ticket for China. After the defeat in Israel, Serbia will take the harder road in order to go to the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 and try to defend the silver medal from Spain they won in 2014. During the whole match the national team of Serbia was searching for its own game, and both teams were leading during the match. At the end, the last quarter decided the winner, and, in that period of the game, the guests were clueless against the excellent home team play. At the practice before the trip to Israel, the Serbian coach, Aleksandar Đođrević, announced that Rade Zagorac, Stefan Pot, Aleksa Radanov and Dejan Kravić won’t be travelling to Tel Aviv to play against Israel in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2019 European Qualifiers. In the November qualification window, the Serbian team will play two games. The First one against Israel, in Tel Aviv, and the second one against Greece, in Belgrade. For the match against Greece, Đorđević’s squad will be stronger, for three EuroLeague players: Vasilije Micić (Efes), Vladimir Lučić and Stefan Jović (both from Munich), but in Israel they won’t be able to help their teammates. The head coach of the Serbian national team, Aleksandar Đorđević, announced the preliminary squad for the fourth qualification window for the World Cup 2019 in China and 24 names are on the list. The Serbian men team will play against Greece (September 13th) and Estonia (September 16th) in this window. The match against Greece will be played in Iraklion (Crete) and the one against Estonia, in Belgrade. Among the 24 players there are players from EuroLeague teams and from NBA teams, so if they accept the invitation, it will be a great opportunity for basketball lovers to see the best Serbian players on the court. The preparation process for the games against Greece and Estonia will start on September 2nd in Belgrade, where the team will stay until the trip to Crete. Croatian team made it to the second round of World Cup Qualification by beating Romania with a score of 63 – 90. This was a “to be or not to be” game for Croatia because they needed a victory against the team from Romania due to their loss in February against the same rival, but now Drazen Anzulovic’s squad had help from NBA players and they played their roles excellently. Croatia is still on the road for one spot at the World Cup 2019 in China. Dario Saric and Ivica Zubac, combined, scored 42 points (22 from Saric and 20 from Zubac) and 21 rebounds (12 from the player from Philadelphia and 9 from the LA Lakers player). Their teammate, Bojan Bogdanovic, from Indiana Pacers, didn’t have a shooting night and finished the game with 8 points, 4 rebounds and 5 assists. The same number of assists had Dario Saric.

In the third window of the Qualifiers for the China World Cup 2019, Greece won 78 – 96 against Israel in the Group H, while Croatia won 72 – 78 against Italy in the Group D. After five games Greece played in the first round of the Qualifiers, remaining at the first position of the group with all five wins. Israel is now at the second position with 2 wins and three losses and Estonia have the same number of wins and one game less.
